Better to have them in a structured environment where they are accountable to
their team than spreading throughout the community in their spare time, often indoors, unmasked with different people each day. Playing video games, partying, hooking up, etc. This is, of course, assuming the reality that these players will not go lock themselves in their rooms for the semester if football is cancelled. They will act like college students, especially if they have no team to answer to, you take football away and you've taken away their reason to avoid getting covid and you've given them far more time and opportunity to go get it and spread it to others.
