I would not do it any other way, personally. It is a much better setup than the all-in-one consumer gear for my needs. Your use case and needs may differ and what is good for me may not be necessary for you.

Modem -> Firewall (Pfsense) -> 24 port switch -> Netgear Orbi in AP mode.
