fandom is defined by the size of the hate of our rivals, where the refs are always out to get us, and where any defeat to any opponent is a fluke then it gets a little tiresome.
I am not a volleyball junky by any means, but I did watch the tournament game where it looked like BYU did not even belong on the same court with utah. Remember the score? 25-15, 25-15, and 25-15 while BYU was the home team. Drews played like a national player of the year-type game (and she was just a junior, so BYU will have to deal with her for one more year).
I also remember the previous year where BYU made it to the final four and then got absolutely embarrassed by Stanford who then proceeded to lose in the championship game.
So I take it that BYU is a good team or a really good team that rides an awesome home court advantage to overachieve, but that is not quite an elite team. i hope the next round of recruits gets us up to the next step. I think smugness and overconfidence about our current level will hinder us from advancing the program. However, BYU is a good/really good team so its still fun to follow them even if we continue at the current level.
