for where BYU football stands in our marriage, in a good way.
It was in 2004, I think the game was BYU @ Stanford that was the same night as the Spud Days demolition derby (we were at BYU-Idaho). The game wasn't on TV anywhere (or else this might have never happened). I asked out the hottest girl in our ward, and was excited to go to my first demolition derby! It was by far the best date I had ever been on. I don't remember anything specific about the derby - except that it was awesome. I just remember how easy it was to talk with her, the whole night. She looked me in the eyes a lot. I loved it, she had me slayed. She was (is) the prettiest and funnest girl I had ever dated.
So, how did it set the standard for priority? I didn't even remember this part until she told me later. The only time I took my phone out that night was to check the score on the game. She said it wasn't insulting. It stood out to her though, because I updated everyone every time I checked - like I fully expected everyone to sincerely care (which I do!) about the score updates...all the way to the end...of a horrible loss (37-10). She knew from that night, that BYU sports matters to me. I never had to apologize for it. She's never expected me to miss, and I've never had to concede to missing a game, unless it was for something I knew was more important.
