the internship could be great for a couple of alternative career scenarios:

1. Working at a tech company that has a manufacturing customer channel—you’d be a subject matter expert.
2. Working at a manufacturing company with increasing responsibility in the areas where technology can be used to increase productivity/profitability. Again, an opportunity to stand out with a more unique skill set.

And as others have mentioned, you’re not necessarily locking yourself out of your initial career objective.
