Only two apliances we've ever had go bad within the first year or two of use have been microwaves (one whirlpool and now our LG).
For the LG it developed a buggy electrical issue after 10 months, we had LG send a guy out on their dime (1 year mfr warranty - got it from best buy). It wasn't entirely fixed but the rate of error occurrence was much lower so I foolishly didn't push to have them replace it or truly fix it. Recently the problem manifested itself more frequently to the point that it got annoying to use but now it's 14 months after purchase and LG won't fix it for free.
All of our other appliances have provided years of use without issue but for $49 3-year additional coverage will be worth it in my opinion... even on a $300-400 item.
I tend to believe that if an appliance doesn't have issues after about 2 years of use then it's very likely to last a long time.
