I don't believe student loans become a spouse's obligation if you die
Unless you did some sort of post-graduate consolidation with her loans where she co-signed or guaranteed them.
As for life insurance, just buy a 5 or 10 year term policy. Once you don't need it anymore, stop paying the premiums.
