Check your accessory belt first. I'm assuming the power steering was still off "but driveable?" If so, losing the
accessory belt will kill the power steering and the alternator. The weird electrical issues could be related to running the car on the battery and not the alternator.
If the acessory belt is fine, I'd start troubleshooting the alternator and battery.
Lucky for you, so far it sounds like the fix is going to be much more annoying and inconvenient than it is going to be expensive.
