I was going to type this but then remembered that issues my wife has described
have had absolutely nothing to do with fixing the issue. It’s probably the brakes or just out of gas.

Check your accessory belt first. I'm assuming the power steering was still off "but driveable?" If so, losing the

She said power steering came back when she restarted it after it stalled.

Sounds like you need a new battery. Could be corroded / loose connection.
