I’ve removed saying “this” and keep it to “next” and “following”
But I also usually clarify to not misunderstand.
To me, the 13th is the next Wednesday, the 20th is the following Wednesday.

Depends on when he said it. If he said it last Friday, then it’s this week. If he said it today, then it’s next week.

At what point are "this" and "next" not synonymous?

I don't think so; it refers to a specific week. If on Friday I say next Tuesday

Is he Irish or European? They say it differently than we do... and “next” is the very next even if in a day or two. US

We need the word “oxt”. Your use is colloquially understood, but technically doesn’t follow the dictionary def. “Next”

Die on? Lol! It’s obviously not clear to everyone or you wouldn’t have posted it. And it’s caused confusion many times

Yeah, it’s weird not to adjust. Some people forget that the whole purpose of language is to understand and be understood

That's because Wednesday is tomorrow

“This Wednesday” would be two days. “Next Wednesday” implies next week.
