Brees leaving saves $13.5M, reducing his cap hit from $36M to $23M
They're still in a terrible spot. They've been kicking all their salary down the road to contend with Brees, but it's all about to come due

Put it this way, 13% of their cap space next season is still taken up by Brees if he's not playing. This is why people questioned the Taysom signing. Not because he's not good (he is), but because moving on from Brees would work best with a low prices QB on a rookie deal and Taysom is one of the higher paid backups in the league ($16M next season, just ahead of DeShaun Watson)
