Ramen has existed in Japan since at least 1859 (and other forms of Chinese noodles since 1488). Ramen restaurants were popular before the war, but became more so after.
The big ramen boom started in 1910 in Tokyo. Nankin Senryo ramen opened in Kyushuu in 1937 and is still open.
1958 was the invention of cup noodle by Nissin - cool museum if you ever go to Yokohama.
