regular season still means a lot in terms of getting an auto bid

Sure, no one really looks at the regular season champ and says "they are the conference champion". That sort of sucks. And there's a few conferences where the regular season champ doesn't make the tourney because they lost their conference tournament but it's not a lot of great teams that is happening to.
