End of the game fouling is the absolute biggest weakness in basketball. I have often wondered about a different way to
handle basketball fouls that would change the game. Whenever someone is fouled, if they weren't shooting, or if they missed the shot they took, give them the ball at the point of the foul with a 6 foot wide circle around them cleared of players and let play commence.

That way, if you get fouled on a layup, it is an easy shot from the place of the foul and the player gets basically an uncontested layup. That would eliminate hack-a-shack stuff. If you get fouled on a three, you get to take the three essentially without a defender. If you choose, you don't have to shoot, you can just pass to a teammate and play commences.

No free throws ever, except if you made the shot when you got fouled. If you made the shot, you get one free throw, just like now.

If you get fouled in the backcourt, you have the option of an in bounds pass at mid court or the same rule as above.

If you get fouled near the end of the game, it doesn't give the other team the ball, you just continue to have it from the point of the foul with an opportunity to pass to a teammate and continue play.

I feel like this rule would largely eliminate strategic fouling in the game. I think it could make for a really interesting version of basketball.
