I am a huge Coach Pope fan. I think he has done great things at BYU and will continue to do great things. I consider myself to be pretty drunk on the blue kool-aid. I dream of BYU making the rare sweet 16 (twice in my lifetime) or maybe even a Final 4 if this staff can stick together.
But I don't understand all the fear of Coach Pope leaving right now for one simple reason. He hasn't done anything in the post-season yet. Nothing!
In his time at UVU, he never made it past the semi-finals of the WAC tournament.
His teams have lost in the semi's of the conference tournament each of the last three years as the favored #2 seed. His teams are 2-3 as a favorite in the conference tournament.
He has never coached an NCAA or even NIT tournament game.
Again, I love Coach Pope but I don't see a school like Kentucky coming to steal him away until his teams start to have some postseason success. Maybe (hopefully) that will happen next month but so far his postseason resume is pretty lacking.
Now I could see Coach Burgess leaving for a head coaching position soon and maybe even Coach Fueger or Robinson but I think Coach Pope needs to build up his resume a bit before a big school comes knocking.
