As far as VPN "protecting your data" all you are doing is hiding your browsing from your ISP whilst making it available
to some 3rd party VPN service. Not saying it isn't worth it for location spoofing, but unless you are particularly worried about your ISP knowing where you are surfing, there's no real security benefit.
OTOH, if you setup a VPN server on your home router and then connect to it from your phone/laptop while on travel, that is much more secure than using wifi hotspots.
