I am no expert, but lived here 20+ years
I mowed today, it was getting too long in some places and it had to be done. It is normal to do a first mow in mid April.

I normally do the IFA 4 step fertilizer and it does make a difference.

Normally do not water until May, and usually stop in early October. All depends on the rains. When you do start you don't need to water much. Wait until it gets regularly above 80. Your lawn will let you know.

As for weeds and crab grass. Get the preventer, and then also the sprays to treat it. Many of these things do not work as effective until it gets warmer.

Good luck.
