Why did anyone ever assume Pope would be like Few or a BYU lifer?
As a college player, he didn't value BYU above better opportunities, enrolling at Washington and playing well there.

And then when the opportunity came, he transferred to a better program (Kentucky) and had it pay off for him.

In the NBA (and European leagues) he also moved around a lot so is obviously comfortable with that, even if it wasn't his choice during that time.

As a coach though, he's also bounced around quite a bit, looking to improve his rep and position; but somehow we assume that a guy who has never committed anywhere long term (he even did 3 years of med school before changing his mind) is going to settle down and stay here forever?

Realistically Pope is either a disappointment or gone in the next few years (and we're probably lucky he doesn't have enough track record to get the offers from Utah or Arizona yet).

The hope is that he can be (for BYU basketball) what Urban Meyer was for Utah football. Raise them to another level and then the right hire comes in afterward who WILL stay long term and is largely able to maintain that improved performance
