They're wrong about educated people. The word originally is Hakka/Cantonese
Is Ke Jup and was derived from a Vietnamese fish sauce. The Cantonese added tomatoes and English traders transliterated the words to sound like the Cantonese word. Ketchup is the most phonetically accurate to the Cantonese word if read in standard English.
