I don't understand this reasoning at all.

Draft starts at three, right? So they essentially have the first pick in the draft, outside of Lawrence and Wilson obviously. But a couple of things to consider:

  • Atlanta could take a QB
  • Atlanta reportedly is open to trading with someone who wants a QB (Denver/New England/etc.)
  • Detroit could take a QB
  • Before SF made the trade, Carolina was likely going to take a QB. When they realized 3, maybe 4, of the top QB's would be gone, they got Darnold
  • Denver wants a QB
  • Eagles could take a QB, but it seems they were only in love with Wilson

I don't know why you think SF is panicking. I think it's between Lance and Fields, and the whole Jones thing was total BS. They're doing their due-diligence and making sure they get their guy. But by trading up to 3, once they know who their guy is, they've got him. Their worst case right now is getting their top choice between Lance/Fields/Jones. I would much rather be there than sitting at 8, waiting for a team to jump them.

You're right, one of those three might be available at 8 or around there. One of them might have been available at 12. But why would you wait to potentially get your 5th ranked QB when you could get someone you like way better. It's possible that the 49ers like one of the three available more than Wilson. Or maybe one of those three is even their #1 QB. It's not likely, but it's possible. But if you're going to swing big and get a QB, you might as well get the one you want.
