In the article I read, it said she had lost a lot of weight and was malnourished
That's the only reason I might believe she could've been there for a good portion of the time she was missing - because of reports that she was malnourished and had lost a ton of weight while missing.
It wouldn't surprise me to learn she found food other placed - but maybe had stolen it or something and didn't want to admit to that.
It also wouldn't surprise me to learn that she came down the canyon and handful of times here and there.
