For whatever bizarre reason, they had had the head coach reporting directly to ownership, not the GM. They never let the GM hire his own personnel, to include the head coach, and then the head coach couldn't even hire his own staff.

Enter Joe Douglas. This is his second year now, and it seems that ownership has actually allowed him free reign to act as general manager. Joe Douglas was able to bring in to the front office people he wanted, and the big kicker was that Joe Douglas was the guy who brought in Robert Saleh.

Then Joe let Saleh hire his own coaches.

In the past the Jets organization had a seriously disjointed structure, but it seems that the arrival of Joe Douglas has changed that from a front office perspective, and pretty much everybody believes Saleh will do a great job as coach.

I am very happy he is Zach's coach, because every interview he absorbs questions about Zach, and turns it into team. Over and over you will hear him say, "not just Zach, not just Zach." He's having none of the New York media trying to pile pressure onto his young quarterback.

I was listening to a talking head asked about if it was wise for the Jets to go offense with their first four draft picks and he said that was a reflection on Saleh being confident in his ability to put together a defense. He said the head coach believes he can come in and with his scheme take the players they already have and improve that defense, which frankly was not that bad. It was the offense that was a complete catastrophe.

So he said that Salah was saying I got the defense you go get that quarterback what he needs and then we can look at filling some spots on D.

Jets fans are tough. But if you go read comments on a couple of the YouTube videos with Zach or Joe douglas or coach Salah and you get an almost apprehensive sense of optimism. It's like they all feel more optimistic then they have been in a while and it makes them very uncomfortable.

Same old Jets may not be the same old Jets anymore...
