more than any other: grizzly bears. The Lewis & Clark journals are fascinating to read on this topic. The Mandan and Hidatsa tribes during the first winter in North Dakota repeatedly warned L&C about the bears as they would be venturing up the Missouri in the Spring through Montana. L&C had never encountered grizzly bears before. After several near death experiences with grizzly bears that spring, even with strong guns, on May 6, 1805, Lewis wrote, "I find that the curiossity of our party is pretty well satisfied with rispect to this anamal"
