The middle of the first season's production because they thought there was great screen chemistry between Boyd and Raylon and Boyd was originally supposed to die in the first episode.

So the first several episodes after the pilot are what the show was originally going to be. Once they were able to write Boyd back into the show, that's when the real story arc truly begins.

It's kind of a modern day Tombstone. It's unlikely Doc Holliday was nearly as cool as he was portrayed by Val Kilmer, but it made for a great movie.
