Another possible factor is that fact that since we think that diet drinks are “calorie free” we drink them in way higher volumes than we would if we thought they were spiking our blood sugar/insulin levels.
Your story is definitely compelling though. I drink a lot of diet drinks and they certainly don’t seem to be helping me lose weight, I can say that for sure.
