Yesterday we went to the National Museum of Wildlife Art
They have a special exhibit Ai Weiwei along with an Andy Warhol exhibit. The Weiwei pieces are animal portraits representing the Chinese zodiac. They were done with legos and very colorful. The Warhol exhibit was a series of endangered species done in his colorful style.
That was all cool but our real reason to go was because they now have endochrome glasses for the color blind. Our 17-yr old son who has been to the museum plenty over the years, is red-green colorblind. When he heard they had the glasses he had to go.
We decided to walk through the Weiwei/Warhol exhibit first because it had bright colors. It was awesome when he saw pink against brown. He loved lime green against yellow. It was his first time to comprehend maroon and purple really threw him off.
Next we went to a lounge area where he looked out at the mountains he had grown up with. He loved the gradients of the greens and he could see the colors of the sagebrush. He also could see dead fir trees intermixed with healthy ones.
We then viewed the balance of the works. Normally when you view art you stand a few feet away to take it all in. He stood an inch away in awe. He loved seeing the details and gradients. There was a piece depicting wildlife running from a fire that had subtle orange flames. He’d seen the piece before but this time he could see the flames.
We weren’t quite ready to leave so we headed to a children’s art class room and he rifled through bins of crayons and markers. He was just delighted to see the colors and try them out.
At one point he looked at some photos he took from Moab that were on his phone. He was just shocked.
Before we left we went out on the patio. He was all in on checking out the grass and sagebrush. There was a rock with lichen that was grey, green and orange. He just loved it. He looked at the clear sky and could see the light and deep blues.

Here’s a few photos of his discoveries:

It really was an awesome experience to watch him discover. He had a bit of a headache after about an hour and a half. Not sure if it was eye strain or sensory overload. We decided the glasses would work well in short spurts - sight seeing, art displays, movies, gaming etc.
