Hawaii and BYU were 'co-champs' of the WAC in 1992 along with Fresno and since Hawaii beat BYU, I'm pretty sure they would have gotten the nod.
1996 is the only team that would have made it and not been embarrassed.
And, for me at least, the idea that BYU should join a G5 because it would be 'easier' makes the argument seem disingenuous. I want BYU to make the playoff because they belong, not because they made it through some back door. Anyone who argues that the G5 is underrepresented and then goes on to say that joining a G5 is an easier route to the playoffs is making conflicting arguments IMO.
