For one, there's no precedent for kicking a school out of a conference. Imagine
how politically and legally messy that could be.
Also, remember that conferences aren't just considered an athletic thing by the people in power. The P5s, especially, view conference affiliation as being part of a collegial club. It would be very out of character and culture to make their special club subject to a cynical business decision like contraction.
