By your take of when those lost their mystique it would be 1987 or so for BYU

A few unranked years in a row and then a brief resurgence where it looks like they might be OK, but it ultimately flames out.

LaVell was obviously an incredible coach, but the truth is that BYU finished ranked in the top 25 only 5 times in his last 15 years (Bronco did it 5 times in 11 years). The mystique died long before LaVell left.
