I would say that the BoT is thinking decades ahead with a very different set of priorities than we fans do
If it's important to the Lord for the BYU football team to be in a top conference competing against the best and making lots of money - then maybe the Lord's priorities will align with the fans. However, I think His priorities are much different than most BYU fans' priorities.
