The world was catching up 50 years ago when the Soviet Union beat the US for the
goid. Then the same point was driven home when the US got bronze ~20 years ago. The media consensus was that the US could count on winning gold only if it sent nearly all of its very best. The same is true today. The US left most of its very best basketball players at home.
