I mean, ESPN gave the Big12 $20M/yr/team. ESPN gives BYU ~$5M/yr
So it's hard to argue that ESPN would have increased the payout by more than $20M (the amount required to increase average payout) if BYU had gone to the Big 12.
If they would have tacked on an extra $25M/yr on that Big12 contract? Well then BYU did terribly in negotiations with ESPN to only get just under $5M
