I think the perfectionism involved w gymnastics is particularly bad, though.
But, yeah, it's a danger at every level of such entirely skill-based performance. There's so little sense of play in individualistic "competition."

How do you find enjoyment in competition & performance without play?

In my mind, gymnastics is best done as spectators entertainment, not as competition. Where the performers, like professional dancers, simply find enjoyment in displaying their hard-earned art before an appreciative, paying audience.
