I would rather my son go on a mission over the military but if I may share a ...
story of a young man who was 2 years older than me. He came from a great family. His Dad was a bishop although maybe not at this time yet. But Russell wasn't to interested in the Church. So after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marines. Now while in the Marines, the Corp told him he will go to church on Sunday. He could go to his church or he could go to the on base Baptist/Protestant/etc church. Well if he had to go he would go to the convenient one. After a year of listening to the preacher talk about salvation and the gospel, he knew that that wasn't what he had been taught. After two years in the Corp, he decided he would go to the local LDS ward. By the time his 3 yr enlistment was up, he made the decision to go on a mission. Imagine his parents and family's shock and joy, when he came home and announced he was putting his papers in. Russell served a mission, went to school, met his sweetheart, married in the Temple and believe it or not was eventually a bishop.

Now I am not saying this will happen with your son, let him know what you think is best for him but let him know he is the one who will have to decide. That you will love him and be there for him.

My parents invested 60 years of their lives in us kids. We all went on missions 4 of the 6 were married in the Temple. 2 have left the Church. We don't get to choose what our kids will do. We can only pray and love them.

Interesting its alot like Heavenly Father and us.
