Mixed relays have been around for a long time. I've watched them for years at
certain track meets. Just like some track meets will feature a thrower's 4X100 relay as the last event of the meet, there are certain track meets every year that include a mixed gender 4X400.
Just because it's new to the Olympics doesn't mean it's a new event. Skateboarding is new this year, and it's been around for a century in other venues.
