The Padres still have a few boat anchors dragging down their future
Machado is under contract through 2028, Hosmer is signed through 2025 and Myers through 2023. All three players are already dropping off in production from their peak years and it won't get better over the next few years. Snell looked like a bargain when that deal was made, but he's been atrocious and he's also signed through 2023. Darvish, who turns 35 this season and has a history of injuries, is also signed through 2023.

They have a huge % of their payroll locked up with those 5 guys who are not getting any better at this point and will likely get significantly worse. They chose to go all-in to win the world series this year or next and they likely have some buyer's remorse at this point. Preller pulled a similar stunt when he brought in the old, broken down versions of Matt Kemp and Justin Upton to team with Myers in the outfield. I'm not sure he's learned anything since then.
