the 2 schools are in very different positions when it comes to racial issues. One is owned by an institution that discriminated very severely against blacks until 1978, has some very cringe-inducing quotes regarding blacks from people in leadership positions, and is actively working to rehabilitate its reputation with the black community as a result. Again, there’s no way of knowing if a coach doing the exact same thing at BYU would get fired, severely disciplined like Scalley, or not disciplined at all, but if he did get fired that would be much more a reflection of the LDS church’s history and the particularly sensitive nature of black relationships with the church than the appropriate discipline for doing what Scalley did.
