Bronco Mendenhall's dad played at BYU. His brother Mat played at BYU. And Bronco wanted to play at BYU. Twice.
He wanted to play at BYU coming out of high school, but he wasn't good enough and ended up in JC. He wanted to play at BYU coming out of JC, but BYU thought he wasn't good enough so he accepted a scholarship to Oregon State.
Then he coached at BYU for 12 years as an assistant and head coach. He has the second most wins of any coach in BYU history.
I'm not sure what the criteria is for being a BYU guy. Seems pretty arbitrary.
I don't think many would say Lavell is not a BYU guy. They even named the stadium after him. If the criteria is playing there, Lavell wouldn't qualify...and the only reason Bronco wouldn't qualify is because BYU didn't want him.
