There are thousands of things that we subject our ears to that are damaging. Lots of things beyond our control. Crowd noises is one of those things. So there should be no rule based off crowd noise. We can’t go through life trying to turn everything down.

The point you do have is everyone should invest in good quality ear plugs. Not the dumb cheap foam ones. Ones that drop volume levels but still allow you to enjoy events. Yes they exist and can range from 30 bucks to a few hundred bucks depending on how nice.

I have even thought I wonder if there is some tech you can put into player helmets to prevent hearing damage. Or just have them wear the custom molded earplugs.

Secondly anybody getting someone after wearing earplugs going “okay grandpa” are just as dumb. Come talk to me when you are wearing hearing aids at very young age. I have family members who started wearing hearing aids before they hit 40.

I have seen several CBers complain about their ears ringing. That is a symptom for hearing loss and often that ringing is not temporary.
