is true that money matters to coaches; they want to be paid market value, and they deserve to be paid market value. For years BYU has underpaid its coaches and other employees relative to market value on the rationale that their job is part church service. As Monson points out, that is an outdated rationale. This is especially true considering the church has $100 billion in their rainy day fund. We can afford to pay our coaches and other church employees market rate.
Our coaches in several sports are doing so well right now that if BYU isn’t careful they are going to get poached.
Don't give our coaches a reason to leave. BYU is on the verge of making a lot more money once they join the Big 12. But don't wait until then. Increase their salaries now and keep a good thing going. That would be a good faith move that the coaches would appreciate tremendously, and hopefully it will help them want to stay at BYU long term.
