I was asking the people around me if the system install wasn’t finished. Even when the crowd was quiet, we couldn’t make out what was being said over the speakers.

Yes, I think they're trying to make it so the noise travels south towards campus and not north into the neighborhood

They did. Take a look next game. Small speakers line the top of the bleachers.

Pretty sure what you saw was wifi antennas. Only speakers are in the north end.
