I took it as simply saying that people are complex.
Todd, as a Utah fan, did some dumb things that he isn't proud of.
Apparently in response, some BYU fans did some dumb things that they shouldn't be proud of either (assuming there's any truth to the idea that people were sending photos of his wife and children, threatening violence, etc.)
I took the article more of a story that most people aren't all good or bad - and maybe we need to allow people to be human while holding them accountable, making room for mistakes and repentance.
