My guess is that coaches like having a solid punter and want him to further
Enhance his skill there.

We all know he has an amazing leg and can kick the crap out out of the ball, but there are other things he can continue to work on, including:

1. His hands, to make sure he doesn’t drop the ball on punts or as the holder on fg and Pat, like he did in AZ game

2. His speed, as in how fast he gets the ball away after catching to ensure never blocked. It was almost blocked on the final punt against UTSA last year.

3. Most importantly, his strategic placement on getting it as close to the goal line without going into the end zone, specifically pinning it in the corner near the pylon so it goes out of bounds rather than into the end zone.

Riley Stephenson didn’t have as strong of leg as Ryan by the time he reached his sr year, but he got very good at these other aspects of punting, especially at pinning the ball near the goal line.

So my guess is that coaches want him to perfect this and let someone else worry about kicking.

I wish he could do both, I’d love to see that powerful leg try some long field goals.
