I do better, have a more comfortable and enjoyable experience a fan, if I try to see things from both sides, good and bad.
If I only talk about the wins, the things we did well, the plays where we dominated, how far we’re going up in the rankings, which bowl, NY6 or the Tourney, and jump all the way onto the hype train then it’s devastating for me when we have failure. It hurts. That’s no fun. Been there so many times.
So I’ve learned to temper my expectations. I’ve learned to find joy in successes while readily talking about our teams weaknesses so I don’t get too high.
Example, Sure, it’s fun to dream about going undefeated. But be reasonable. If you’re heavily favored in every game, say you have a 70% chance of winning every game. Some talk about going undefeated. But if you get 70% over 12 games then you have a 1.38% chance of going undefeated, that’s real life. There’s a 98% chance of being disappointed.
So for me and, I’m guessing, so many others, it feels better to talk about weakness, and what we need to do better so that our expectations are best more closely aligned with reality.
Everyone has their own way to be a fan.
