My wife and I loved Southern Indiana. We talk about moving back regularly.
Our ward was very welcoming from day one. The people in the mid-west are just the salt of the earth, very friendly. Housing and land is super cheaper.
The downside is the weather: possible tornados, heavy rain/flooding, & freezing rain in the winter. The rain was rough at times. It literally rained for over two weeks straight.
