In the 5 years from 2015-2019 (not counting 2020 for obvious reasons), there were 106 out of 125 ranked teams that finished the season with 2 losses or more, or 84.8%.
Of the 19 teams that finished with 1 loss or less, 13 finished in the top 5. The other 6 were #8 Houston in 2015, #15 W. Michigan in 2016, #6 UCF in 2017 (finished undefeated), #7 Wisconsin in 2017 (they killed BYU that year in Provo), #11 UCF in 2018, #19 App State in 2019.
71 teams out of 125 finished with 3 losses or more, or 56.8%.
Of the 35 teams that finished with 2 losses, 22 of them finished in the top 10. 12 of the other 13 were G5 programs with Notre Dame at #12 in 2019 being the only non-G5 program to finish outside the top 10 with 2 losses or less.
When BYU has finished with 1 loss or less, we finished #1, #5, #7, #11, #12, and #13.
When BYU has finished with 2 losses, we finished ranked every time since 1977 forward (6 times - #12, #13, #14, #16, #20 [1977], and #25 [2001 with horrible SOS])
So, in 42 seasons starting with 1977, we finished with 2 losses or less 12 times, or 28.6%. We finished ranked pretty much in the Top 10 (with 1 loss or less) or Top 15 (with 2 losses).
Two takeaways:
1. If we finish this season with 2 losses or less, it will most likely be with the toughest SOS we've ever had in such a good season. I believe we will be rewarded.
2. Most everybody outside the top 10 finishes with 3 losses or more - unless they're a G5. This means there's going to be a lot of ranked teams losing between now and the end of the season.
