They often pay their one way by fundraising etc. but the rest you have correct.
They're really not comparable to what we do. My BIL and his family of 7 (kids are 11-17) are going to Guatamala this year for a week around Thanksgiving to help build a school. It's a great thing but isn't the same as a 2 year mission that we do.
