We have architectural items in the backlog for that reason. Then I work with the tech lead to understand why they’re
there and urgency of them to prioritize against user features. And like you said, we have spike stories for some of the bigger/newer/foundational aspects that we know we need to spend more time on to avoid completely redoing things like data or security architecture

Whatever you do, don’t try SAFe. It’s garbage. Scrum is great when the team all does it and trusts each other
