I've decided to DIY my own permanent LED Christmas light install. I'm hoping to get the LEDs in time to install in Nov
I looked into some of the commercial options like Everlights, or some products for DIY like PermaTrack. None of those really made sense, either from a cost or effort perspective. Part of it is the way my gutters are- there is no soffit or edge on these gutter lines where I could put the lights. I could drill through the gutters like Everlights does, but I wasn't too thrilled about that. Plus managing the power with everlights got complicated- I would need to wire new outlets all over the place. It was more expensive and just as much (if not more) effort.

The install is big- about 440 feet. I wanted to use at least 12V LEDs to make the voltage drop easier to manage. I also wanted truly individually addressable LEDs, not groups of 3, etc. And I wanted the ability to have both a continuous lightbar effect as well as a traditional Christmas light spacing effect.

I settled on some IP65 rated WS2815 LED strips put inside of aluminum V-shape channels with diffuser lenses. I will split it up into 2 different zones, each independently powered and with its own controller, and each zone will be split into 3-4 different output segments for power management and so I don't have any more than ~900 LEDs in a segment. I will use a couple of controller boards called the DigQuad that has 4 outputs, power control and fusing. It runs free software called WLED that will get me all of the effects and patterns that I want. You can easily sync between the controllers over wifi.

I'll have to add some wood boards behind the gutters to secure the channels below them. I'll run power injection lines in the channel with the strips. I have one segment that will be about 13 amps, so I'll have to run some 14 gauge wires for power injection.

Its going to cost me about $900 for the LEDs (from AliExpress- shipping time quoted is 1 month), about $400 for the aluminum channels, and probably $600 in other misc stuff like wire and power supplies enclosures and wood and stuff.
