HS both claimed "national championships" the same year. I was never quite sure how that worked.

I think it may have been that they entered a competition that included teams from all over the country. It didn't include ALL teams in the country, just those that participated in that particular tournament. I assume there were many different such competitions around the country, and the winners of each one called themselves national champions 😉
